friends-

we're one month away from the most unique & important event that the crag has ever hosted, so i thought i'd send out a quick update.

first, we've set a pretty sizable fundraising goal for the comp, $5000. the goal itself will require the spirit of ubuntu. it's more than we've ever raised in a single event; more than we can possibly raise without the help of the community. a goal like this requires your help; it requires everyone's help.

with that in mind, there are three things you can do to help:

1. HANG A POSTER. our friend cody tumblin has created a powerful and simple poster for the event. if you're interested in putting a few up around your school, church, business or favorite coffee shop, please email me (newton-at-cragcoolsprings-dot-com) and i'll send you a pdf to print and post. if you don't want to hang a poster, consider making the comp poster your profile pic for the next 30 days.

2. INVITE YOUR FRIENDS. we invited you to participate because we know you. we don't know your friends or your friend's friends. we don't have the influence at your school, business or church that you do. talk to your friends about what we're doing, and invite them to come. even if they aren't climbers, even if they don't compete, they can help by making a donation, buying a raffle ticket, or talking to their friends.

3. COME TO THE COMP. we're planning an awesome event. we have raffle donations from companies like patagonia, petzl, so ill, evolv, rock & ice, and many, many more. we'll have presentations from blood:water. we'll have a few tricks up our sleeves that you won't want to miss. oh yeah, and the climbing will be top notch.

as desmond tutu said, "we think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. when you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity."

thanks for reading this, thanks for being part of our community, and thanks in advance for your help.

climb on!

i've been totally wrapped up in the winter olympics for the past two weeks (specifically the hockey tournament). the olympics always turn me into an emotional wreck. all these athletes - most of them amateur - giving everything they have for love of country and a chance at glory brings tears to my eyes and makes me proud to participate in a sport that most people do simply for the love of the sport.

there's talk of climbing being included as an olympic sport, and the implications that it might have on our sport (read: drug testing). as i think about it, i don't know that many things excite me more than having a world wide platform for a sport i love (and sell) that potentially would bring a bunch of enthusiastic new customers into the gym, ready to become the next chris sharma, daniel woods, lisa rands or alex johnson. i also think that, once most american climbers really saw how european climbers trained, we'd see a new dedication to the sport from the country's top climbers.

do you think climbing can become the summer olympics' version of snowboarding? do you want climbing in the olympics?

lots of snow and ice

shut things down for a few days

but we're back, baby!

i really hated to close the crag for a couple of days, but i think it was the right decision to do. i didn't, and don't, want my employees, members, friends & guests getting out in the slop unless absolutely necessary, and i know how "necessary" most of our regulars consider climbing...

which brings up a question:
